Gynecologic cancers (Cervical, Uterine & Ovarian)

Gynecologic cancers concern the female reproductive system, including ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and cervical cancer.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Bloating
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Troble eating or feeling full quickly
  • Urinary symptoms such as urgency or frequence

See your doctor if you have any of the listed signs or symptoms.

About 20% of ovarian cancers are found at an early stage. When found early at a localized stage, about 94% of patients live longer than 5 years after diagnosis.

Uterine cancer

Signs & Symptoms

The most common sign of uterine or endometrial cancers is unusual vaginal bleeding. Endometrial cancer can usually be cured. Uterine sarcoma is harder to cure.

The uterus is a hollow, muscular organ where a fetus grows. Uterine cancer can start in different parts of the uterus. Most uterine cancers start in the endometrium (the inner lining of the uterus). This is called endometrial cancer. Most endometrial cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancers that begin in cells that make mucus and other fluids).

Uterine sarcoma is an uncommon form of uterine cancer that forms in the muscle and tissue that support the uterus.

Cervical cancer

Signs & Symptoms

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Strange discharge
  • Fatigue
  • Changes to bowel movements
  • You smoke (or used to smoke)

The Pap test is one of the most reliable and effective cancer screening methods available, and women should have yearly exams by an OB-GYN. However, the Pap test may not detect some cases of abnormal cells in the cervix. The HPV test screens women for the high-risk HPV strains that may lead to cervical cancer. It is approved for women over age 30.

Although screening methods are not 100 percent accurate, these tests are often an effective method for detecting cervical cancer in the early stages when it is still highly treatable. Talk with your doctor about which type of cervical cancer screening is right for you.
